Coaches

The Fencing Institute offers both group and individual instruction focusing on foil and epee. Individual training in sabre is also available by arrangement.

Group training sessions times are on the Session Times page.

Individual lessons are by arrangement with our coaches.

All our coaches provide group and individual training and provide the very best quality of regular fencing training in all weapons.

We are privileged to have three expert Fencing Masters:


Daniel Chan, a former Hong Kong National Coach and Olympic Games epee representative. Daniel is the Fencing Institute's foundation coach. Many NZ National Champions and medalists have been taught by him. He has the most current NZ National Champions and medalists. Daniel's aim is for fencers to have fun and fence well. Daniel provides provides coaching in foil and epee.


Kate Brill, a French trained Maitre d'Armes (coach), twice NZ Olympic Fencing Coach, producing NZ's only Olympic Men's Epee Finalist. Represented New Zealand internationally in women's foil and women's epee. 12th in the 1989 World Cup women's event, Welkenrad. Kate won French National Circuit Women's Epee events and French National Club Team title in 1989. Coach of the NZ Youth Olympics Team 2009 (Bronze medal Women's Epee Teams). Kate provides training in foil and epee. Kate's aim as a coach is for people to enjoy developing fitness and new skills while meeting new people.


Martin Brill, a French trained Maitre d'Armes (coach), is a New Zealand double Olympian (1984, 1988) in epee and a finalist (7th) in the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. As we as being a five time national epee title holder he was the New Zealand Olympic Fencing Coach at the 1992 Barcelona. Martin has coached many fencers to national titles and was Team Captain for New Zealad's 2006 Commonwealth Fencing Championship Gold Medal Women's Epee Team. Martin's goal is for people to learn to play the game and to play the game fully, to the best of their ability.
